life changing news

Oct. 18th, 2008 | 01:31 pm
location: grenoble
music: effington

my favorite ben folds song has changed. for 10 years, philosophy remained at the top of my thoughts. today, i have decided that it's time for change.

If there's a god,
he's laughing at us
And our football team.

Effington could be a wonderful f'ing place
I can see it from the highway
And I'm wondering
Are they f'ing in their yards
f'ing in their cars
f'ing in the trailers and the backroads and the parking lots of Effington
Making my way to Normal, Illinois.

Maybe I should ditch this little white rental on the interstate
And start a new f'ing life...in effington
I could change my name, grow a beard, start a family
Or I could just keep moving on, moving on, moving on, moving on
Not stop 'til I get to Normal.

I want to live in Effington
I want to die there too.
Please bury me in Effington
In Effington
In Effington
Oh

I've got this movie in my mind of Effington
And the soundtrack to it sounds like this

I want to live in Effington
I want to die there too.
Please bury me in Effington
In Effington
In Effington
Oh

If there's a god,
he's laughing at us
And our football team.

And then the people who live in Normal
Can buy the movies that I'll make in Effinghton
That's what normal people do
Normal people do it too
Normal people do it too
Normal people do it
People do it
People do it
People do it

I want to live in Effington
I want to die there to.
Please bury me in Effington
In Effington
In Effington
In Effington
In Effington

Brac & Jenna's wedding and Ben Folds Chicago Madness

Clearly, the best moment was Brac & Jenna's wedding. The ceremony was beautiful, the reception a blast, and the company so much fun! Of course, there were many stories to tell the next morning. People found in the bathrooms, people dancing with people they never thought they would dance with, make up on when waking up in the morning... And dancing dancing dancing. It was a great couple of days. Congrats to Brac and Jenna and thanks for the best wedding ever!

The next few days I spent hanging around the house with mom, and hanging out with my bro and friends in the evening. My birthday party was sweet. I can't believe how long it's been since I've been home for my bday. We probably went through 6 bottles of wine with 7 people present. Great fun.

On Thursday Katie came down to hang out in Roanoke. We ate delish chili and then cooked smores on the bonfire. Later on in the evening we played a pretty sad shuffle board game...with 3 people you can't really play correctly. But we had dibs on the jukebox all night long!

Friday was the best day ever. We went up to Chicago in time to see (and meet!!) Ben Folds at the Mac Store on Michigan Ave. He played about 7 songs, then met his fans...including us. Unfortunately, he did not remember me. But he did shake my hand! WHOOO. After eating some good cheese and drinking wine, we headed to the theater. Only to run into someone I'd met at Brac's wedding in the line to get in. It's a small world, isn't it. The show was the best I'd ever seen. He played 1 set of his new songs (Way to Normal may be the best of his albums) then a whole other set of old songs! It was like being at 2 concerts. I also realized that I must be getting old, because instead of getting way up front, we decided to grab a table in the back (but elevated to see above everyone) and drink beer (3 Floyds. very good) during the show. Really, it was the best show ever. After the show we ate some Mexican food and headed over to crash the end of a bachelor's party of a friend of Katie's friend (the future groom had gone to bed) and walked home...almost stealing a pumpkin and having our own live soundtrack following us home. It was an insane and eventful day.

Saturday and Sunday were spent trying to get ahold of people, seeing them, and enjoying life in the city of Chicago. It is one of my favorite cities in the world. The Chicago Marathon was on Sunday, so there were like a bazilion people walking around, but that just made it more fun.

Outside of the events that occurred, I had a great time catching up with people and re-getting to know others. I really do have great friends, and an awesome family, and it always gets harder and harder to come back to France. Let's just hope the economy gets better soon and our government gets its shit together even sooner!

Oh, and you guys better start visiting now. Cause I won't come home until everyone visits me here!

it's never too late to remind you that band nerds, chorus freaks, and little kids can sometimes be really really cool.

The best part was probably being with Brac and Jenna and hearing about their wedding plans, and being around for 2 showers. It's all becoming soooo real and it makes me so happy! I also spent a night in Michigan, went to Chicago with the goils, went to 2 of Max's soccer games....wow. Way to short. But I'll be going back soon!!!!

It was a great trip, I have to say that. The first few days were spent chillin at the pool at the house, but I also got to visit Lisbon, Sintra, Fatima, Porto, Ponte de Lima (the oldest city in Portugal) and Guimaraes (the city where Portugal was born). I also experienced a Portuguese baptism and some family BBQs and dinners.

Some of my impressions of Portugal: although it's a part of Europe, it's still extremely poor and suffering from the years under a dictator. But the Portuguese are recovering quite well. An interesting statistic that someone told me : there are about 10 million Portuguese, living in Portugal. And another 5 million that live in other countries to make money. Kinda insane. They're very hardworking, loving people, and I'm sure they'll soon catch up to their neighbors. It's a country full of culture, history, and pride. I loved it!
